This is the first book I’ve managed to finish in almost a month, after facing a bit of a reading dry-spell. “Diary of a void” is the debut novel by Japanese writer, Emi Yagi. It was the perfect quick read to get me out of my slump. The premise is that the protagonist fakes a pregnancy in order to avoid sexual harassment and gender inequality in the work place. Yagi’s work is a commentary on society and how women are seen by men.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first person narrative and found Shibata’s lack of morals surrounding her lie to be oddly entertaining and disturbing at once.
The ending left me feeling a bit annoyed. I’m not going into detail as I don’t want to spoil things, but I needed more and was left feeling deflated. It was a disappointment worthy of knocking off an extra star in my review.
In short, this got me out of my slump but didn’t quite hit the spot.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this one…
