This was my last book of 2022! Snowflake is a coming of age novel about Debbie, who lives on a Dairy Farm with her mother and Uncle Billy. Debbie’s life is beyond unconventional, and the novel tackles mental health in a very real way. I’m amazed that this was Nealon’s debut; it’s so powerful and beautiful. It felt like a hug from a loved one after you’ve had a breakdown. Some parts of the book were quite uncomfortable, but that just gave nuance to the reality of growing up right now. TW: mental health and suicide.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and highly recommend it. Take a look at Debbie’s life. It’s fascinating and chaotic, but gorgeous all the same.
