Long before the almighty Reds took hold of my heart (as painful as that is right now), I loved so much about the culture of Liverpool. From being brought up listening to The Beatles to discovering Willy Russell, one of my all-time favourite playwrights, Liverpool has always been a place I’ve adored.
From reading Educating Rita and Our Day Out as a teenager to teaching Blood Brothers as an adult, the themes in Russell’s work have always resonated with me. I love how he explores and exposes life for the working classes; his plays have truly stood the test of time and are (perhaps unfortunately) just as relevant today as they were forty years ago.
While I’m staying in this fabulous city, I just wanted to share a little appreciation for how much it’s shaped me, even though I’m not from here. It’s a reminder of how deeply the literature and culture we encounter can influence who we become.
Liverpool, thank you!
