A dark romance following Adeline and a mysterious stalker, Zade - a deeply controversial book with serious trigger warnings.
I went into "Haunting Adeline" expecting a dark romance, but what I found was deeply unsettling and, frankly, disturbing. That's without getting into the absurd, predictable and lazy writing. Instead of a compelling love story with morally grey characters, I felt like I was reading a story about sexual assault, thinly veiled as romance. This isn't "dark," it's triggering. The "romance" between Adeline and Zade felt forced and predatory. His actions, which are presented as possessive and passionate, came across as manipulative and controlling. There's a significant power imbalance that isn't explored in a nuanced way; instead, it's glorified. The constant push and pull, the stalking, the lack of consent in numerous situations ? these aren't romantic, they're red flags. People pitching this as a spicy romance need to rethink their life choices! Trigger Warnings: This book needs far more prominent trigger warnings. Readers should be aware that it contains depictions of stalking, non-consensual sexual activity, human trafficking, murder, violence, emotional manipulation and potential elements of Stockholm Syndrome. It's crucial to understand that these themes are not romantic or aspirational, and they can be genuinely triggering for survivors of abuse. I understand that dark romance explores complex and often uncomfortable themes, but "Haunting Adeline" crosses a line. It normalizes and romanticizes abusive behaviour, which is harmful and irresponsible. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Worst book of 2025 so far.
