A charming queer romance with warmth, theatre drama and likeable characters.
Iris Kelly Doesn't Date by Ashley Herring Blake is a fun, easy-read romance with plenty of charm. As someone who doesn't often pick up LGBTQ+ romances, this was a refreshing change, and I really enjoyed getting to know Iris and her journey. The characters were interesting, and while the story followed a fairly predictable path, it was still an enjoyable ride. I was rooting for Iris and Stevie all along.
Iris, a romance writer struggling with both writer's block and her own love life, finds herself tangled in a fake-dating situation with Stevie, an actress, who is dealing with their own insecurities. Stevie was a standout character, awkward, earnest, and full of heart. Their dynamic with Iris had a lovely push-and-pull tension, and their moments together were sweet and sometimes delightfully messy.
Though the plot didn't offer many surprises, the character development and emotional depth made it worth the read. If you enjoy fake dating, theatre drama, and self-discovery, this book is a solid choice.
