Chaos, madness and murder!
What have I just read? And I mean that in the best way possible! The Only One Left by Riley Sager was a chaotic, unhinged thriller with many nods to the Gothic genre.
It follows the story of Kit, a caregiver returning to work after a six month suspension. She is placed at Hope End, to look after Lenora Hope, and elderly lady who is paralysed and mute since she had multiple strokes. Lenora has a horrific reputation as someone who murdered three members of her own family, but got away with it due to insufficient evidence.
Once Kit moves in, she encounters a lot of strange goings on. Are the ghosts of Lenora’s past haunting Hope End, or is something even more sinister at play?
Sager’s writing style had me hooked. I don’t know if the sheer number of twists and turns were incredible or over the top. They were off the scale with the ridiculousness, but I think that’s what I loved about the book! It’s not my usual cup of tea but I’m really pleased I picked it off my shelf this summer.
